Baleyara and …..

On Sunday I went with Guillaume and his family to the market in Baleyara. It takes about 2 hours to go there from Niamey. It’s more about the road-condition than the distance that makes it 2 hours. At the market you could by house supplies and vegetables, but also animals. There were dromedarys, donkeys, goats and cows. I always wanted to have a donkey as I find them cute and kind of cool. They only cost around 30 €, but I don’t know where to put it and I will only be here for 4 months… The dromedars only costs around 150-200 €. But I have the same problem there. I only bought some nice and cold coca-cola.

Going home we took another way in an area where we might see giraffes. We went in and out of the zone. I thought I saw one once, but at a closer look it was only a dromedary. It is very hard to spot the giraffes. I confused trees with them as well. When we finally got on the big paved road that led to Niamey I thought it was over. But then, at the corner of my eye I saw some! So we drove of the road and got closer. They’re very magnificient and were so calm. I only was about 5-10 meters from them. They’re not dangerous. Like pigeons in the city; they’re not afraid of humans and leave them alone, but if you get a little too close, they walk away. I hadn’t been here for a week yet and I’ve already seen giraffes! That pretty much made my day.
